Southern Hummers Alpacas

Welcome to Southern Hummers Alpacas, owned and operated by Jay & Carrie Gamblin. We have six acres in Glencoe, Alabama – located approximately 65 miles northeast of Birmingham.

Our journey into the wonderful world of alpacas began in February 2005 when we acquired a 6-month old, true-black, huacaya male along with a borrowed male as his companion. That spring we headed out west in pursuit of a female(s), visiting many farms along the way and attending our first alpaca auction. We returned home with a proven, bred female and a dream of what we wanted our alpaca farm to become. Granted we were off to a very slow pace in our new venture, we were still very excited to finally begin our “alpaca lifestyle.”

Jay’s attraction to the alpaca was the financial benefits that they offer, while Carrie’s was the alpaca’s end product . . . their beautiful, luxurious fiber. Growing up in a crafty family she enjoys begin able to do so many different with it, such as carding, spinning, felting, & knitting. And besides, who can resist those big, beautiful eyes they have!

Now, 4 years later, we currently have 7 proven-breeding females, 3 maidens, 1 yearling male, 3 new crias and we own 1/3 interest in a magnificent 8-time champion, Hobby Horse Farm Son of a Gun.
